7 Key Criteria for Evaluating Sheet Steel Quality in Manufacturing
Sheet steel is manufactured through a stringent process that must meet high technical standards, ensuring confidence for buyers. Understanding this, THACO INDUSTRIES shares the 7 criteria for evaluating sheet steel quality to help customers choose the most suitable supplier based on their usage needs and project specifications.
Sheet Steel Composition
Sheet steel is formed by rolling flat billets at high temperatures, resulting in various sizes and thicknesses to meet diverse application needs. It is commonly classified into cold-rolled and hot-rolled sheet steel.
Advantages of Sheet Steel
- High hardness and durability, excellent load-bearing capacity, and resistance to warping during fabrication and transportation.
- Available in various thicknesses, sizes, and grades of steel. Each grade has unique physical and chemical properties suited to specific project requirements.
- Cold-rolled sheet steel components offer high precision and aesthetic quality.
- Hot-rolled sheet steel is easy to store and resistant to environmental damage.

Top 7 Standards for Accurate Sheet Steel Quality Assessment
Whether hot-rolled or cold-rolled, sheet steel must meet specific standards to ensure quality. Below are seven key standards commonly used in evaluating sheet steel, compiled by the TCVN/TC Technical Committee on Steel and published by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Standard TCVN 6522:2018
This standard evaluates the quality of hot-rolled sheet steel and replaces TCVN 6522:2008, equivalent to ISO 4995:2014.
- Type: Hot-rolled structural quality sheet steel
- Scope: Applies to structural-quality hot-rolled sheet steel in grades HR235, HR275, HR355
- Purpose: Helps users understand requirements such as thickness, size, fabrication conditions, dimensional tolerances, coil shape, labeling, and customer information
- Inspection: Includes sampling, tensile testing, retesting, verification, and final inspection

Standard TCVN 10351:2014
This standard evaluates fabricated sheet steel and aligns with ISO 7452:2013.
- Type: Hot-rolled sheet steel – Dimensional and shape tolerances
- Scope: Applies to sheet steel rolled on reversing mills with nominal thickness of 3–400 mm and width ≥ 600 mm
- Purpose: Defines tolerances for thickness, width, length, flatness, squareness, and the methods of measurement

Standard TCVN 5709:2009
This standard replaces TCVN 5709:1993 for structural carbon steel sheet used in construction.
- Type: Hot-rolled carbon steel for construction – Technical requirements
- Scope: Widely applied to sheet steel, strip, shapes, bars, and sections in welded or other jointed structural systems
- Purpose: Clarifies steel grades, technical criteria, and test methods for selecting structural carbon steel

Standard TCVN 10357-1:2014
This standard for hot-rolled sheet steel corresponds to ISO 9444-1:2009.
- Type: Continuously hot-rolled stainless steel – Dimensional and shape tolerances – Part 1: Narrow strip and cut lengths
- Scope: Applies to narrow stainless steel strip under 600mm wide and their cut lengths
- Purpose: Provides information on product type and delivery conditions; dimensional tolerances (thickness, width, length) and methods of measurement; edge camber and squareness tolerances; flatness tolerances for cut lengths; coil form; and ordering framework for cut-to-length products

Standard TCVN 2058:1977
Issued by the State Committee for Science and Technology, this standard defines size and specification tolerances for thick hot-rolled steel sheet.
- Type: Thick hot-rolled steel sheet – Sizes and parameters
- Scope: Applies to hot-rolled sheet steel with thickness from 4 to 60 mm
- Purpose: Identifies standard dimensions and acceptable deviations in thickness, length, width, wave distortion, bulging, crescent curvature, shear tilt, and serration
